FLOWERPOT ISLAND

Flowerpot Island is located in Fathom Five National Marine Park and is one of Canada’s most interesting natural artifacts. More specifally, the Island is widley recognized for its rare rock pillers in the shape of a flower pot and its crystal blue waters.

What To See

Small Flowerpot

The island contains two florwepot pillers one big and one small. These rare rock pillers were formed from waves constantly bashing into the cracks in the limestone. Originally there were 3 pillars, however, one unfortunately fell down in 1903.

Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is one of the main hertiage attractions on the island as it was used to help guide ships travelling through Georgian Bay and decrease the amount of shipwrecks within the region.

Activities

Hiking Flowerpot Island

Hiking

Beachy Coves is where you will be dropped off on the island which is a short hike away from the flowerpots! Continuing down that same path is another short hike to the lighthouse!

If you are adventurous and simply want to see more of the island I reccomend hiking the 2.6km loop trail.

Swimming Flowerpot Island

Swimming

These beautiful blue waters are very cold even in the warm summer months. Although, on a hot day it can be extremely relaxing and refreshing going for a quick swim!

Camping Flowerpot Island

Camping

There are 6 campsites offered on Flowerpot Island, each with a wooden tent platform. Camping here gives you the opporunity to see the main attractions on the island in the morning before any tourists arrive. I strongly suggest camping on the island once in your life!

It is a $9.80 camping permit fee, per person per night.

To book a reservations visit Parks Canada or call 1-877-RESERVE (877-737-3783).

Ferry service

There are two services you can choose from including Blue Heron or Bruce Anchor Cruises! These services will take you to and from the island. I personally have only used the Bruce Anchor Cruises ferry company and they were great! They were such nice people who were very enthusiastic and passionate about their jobs. The ferry run from mid May - mid October.

There are two types of Ferry trip options you can choose from so make sure you read them carefully on their websites! Some ferry rides will take you straight to the island whereas others have a clear glass bottom floor and they will show you a sunken ship on the way to the island! There are also other ferry cruise ride options that are offered.

Tips

Book in advance:

I recommend booking this trip in advance as it requires taking a ferry to the island! During the summer is when everyone tries to go and if you drove all the way there and tried to get a ticket that same day there's a very good chane all ferry rides will be full.

arrive early:

I highly suggest getting there at least 30 minutes early to guarantee you find parking as some lots can fill very fast depending on your time slot. This will also give you time to redeem your ticket at the front desk of the ferry service you chose and use the restroom if needed.

Secluded areas:

While you're arriving at the ferry docks you will see a lot of people! You may start to panic thinking that this whole trip is going to be crowded with people and you won't find any secluded areas or get any good photos without others in the background but don't stress!!! Once you're on the island the island is pretty large! It can get crowded taking photos near the flowerpots as they are the main attractions. Sometimes there is even a line up. Although, there are many secluded areas that you can take pictures and trails that you can go on that arn’t as busy.

Food/water:

During the summer months drinks and light snacks are available at the lighthouse, however I still reccomend bringing your own as there is not much of a selection there!

Location

Flower Pot Island is a 20-50 minute ferry ride from Tobermory depending on wether you do the glass bottom boat tour
